How to Check a Tagged URL Before Sharing It

A quick pre-share checklist to catch UTM link mistakes before they pollute campaign data.

One typo in a tagged URL can split your analytics data for the entire campaign. A fast final check keeps tracking accurate.

Validate the base URL

Confirm the page URL is correct and uses https.

Remove accidental redirects, preview links, or staging domains.

Scan each UTM field

Look for spelling inconsistencies and empty values.

Confirm source, medium, and campaign follow your naming rules.

  • No accidental uppercase variants.
  • No trailing spaces.
  • No swapped source/medium values.

Open and test the final link

Click the full URL and verify the destination page loads as expected.

Make sure existing query parameters were not broken while adding UTM tags.

Save the approved version

Copy the final checked URL into your campaign sheet.

Share only this approved version to avoid multiple variants.

Use this before

  • Sending email campaigns.
  • Publishing paid or organic social posts.
  • Handing links to partners or sales teams.

Check first, then distribute

A 60-second review protects data quality and saves reporting cleanup later.
